Use of Force

Use of Force by William Carlos Williams
This text is about a doctor who has to use his force to help a little girl from her illness. He opens her mouth forcefully to see I she had a sore throat so he can diagnose if she had diphtheria. She was hiding the illness from him and her parents. Her dad was holding her and his mom was in the room very nervous and hysterical. The doctor, using his medical techniques, asks the girl to open her mouth but she refuses. He tried a second time, controlling his violent behavior, but the girl bite the wooden tongue depressor. The doctor describes in his head the event “Then I grasped the child's head with my left hand and tried to get the wooden tongue depressor between her teeth. She fought, with clenched teeth, desperately! But now I also had grown furious--at a child. I tried to hold myself down but I couldn't. I know how to expose a throat for inspection. And I did my best. When finally I got the wooden spatula behind the last teeth and just the point of it into the mouth cavity, she opened up for an instant but before I could see anything she came down again and gripping the wooden blade between her molars she reduced it to splinters before I could get it out again.”
Finally, with a spoon, the doctor had to use his force and violet behavior to open the girl’s mouth. She had diphtheria. This text is an example of how the human uses his violent behavior with control to help another human. The doctor had to use his force to diagnose the little girl and to do his job. Also, he had to control his violent behavior to remain professional.
